At the June 13 meeting of the Peninsula Township Board (7 p.m. at the Township Hall), a public hearing will take place regarding the Chateau Grand Traverse (CGT) Half Marathon, associated with the National Cherry Festival (NCF) – Festival of Races. A “large event special use permit” is being requested for the event, which will be held on July 8, 2017.

In a memo to the Township dated May 11, 2017, NCF Business Development Manager Michelle Elliott notes that the event is a foot race with four distances offered; however, only the half marathon and 15K will occur within Peninsula Township. They estimate that there will be 1,450 participants within those two races.

The half marathon will begin at Chateau Grand Traverse at 7 a.m. and head northwest through private property to Peninsula Drive (property owners include Chateau Grand Traverse, Island View Orchards, John and Laura Keenan, and Dan and Cameron Farley). Runners will proceed south on Peninsula Drive to Traverse City.

The 15K will begin at Northwestern Michigan College at 7 a.m., proceed north on East Shore Road, west to McKinley Road and then to Peninsula Drive, where runners will proceed south to Traverse City.

The event will take place between 7 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. There are no requested road closures as part of the event, and the Grand Traverse County Road Commission has granted permission for the race to occur within the road right-of-way.

“This is a worthwhile event that will create little noise, traffic or inconvenience for Peninsula residents,” writes CGT president Eddie O’Keefe in an April 11 letter to the Township. “It will also serve to showcase the beauty of our region, highlight agriculture and promote health and well being.”

Also on the agenda for the June 13 Township Board meeting:

  • “Save Our Trees” presentation
  • Town Hall generator bids
  • Fire Recovery Service Ordinance (Billing service for EMS and Fire Department)
