Today’s Photo of the Day is courtesy of this great old barn on what was once the Giles farm at the end of Cherry Hill Road off of Center Road. The farm is now owned by the Seibold family, who grow cherries, berries and other produce there, and sell it at a small stand across from the Peninsula Township offices on Center Road.

When I was a kid, my best friend, Bethany Beadle, lived on the farm with her family, and I spent many happy hours hanging out at their house, riding her horse Ike, and playing with her Collie, Honey.

It’s always a joy to see the old farms and barns on the Old Mission Peninsula maintained and, in many cases, brought back to life.

  1. This barn holds many stories to tell. My childhood days were spent in the haymow and the basement tending the cows. It look much the same as it did then minus the barnyard fences and the lane to the east heading to the pasture. I’m not sure if my Dad built the barn or Frank Valley who owned the land before. It housed many of my childhood fantasies and dreams. Thanks for the flash from the past. Kathy Giles Schwartz.

I vaguely remember the Beadles. They rented from my Dad until it sold in 1972 or 73 or 74. In 1964 we moved to the place on Blue Water Road. Which is now a winery.

  3. Hello Old Mission Gazette and Jane Boursaw,
I would like to add to the history of the farm this barn is on.

In 1977 it was purchased from Rudy Giles by the Lyle Goff family (my dad).
The Goff family named the road Cherry Hill Road.
The barn itself was fortified in a number of places where it was slowly degrading.
We rebuilt the loading dock you see in the front of the picture.
The house received many upgrades through our years there.
The orchard was converted from a tilled soil orchard to to an orchard of grass lanes.
We installed Trickle Irrigation throughout the entire orchard.
In 1998 we sold the farm to Seibold’s.
