The Legend of Old Befana by Tomie dePaola will be read at Children’s Storytime at Invoke, Morgan Leigh Kelsey’s new skincare boutique that recently opened at 13795 Seven Hills Road, Suite F, on the Old Mission Peninsula (drive around back). See photos of the opening here.
The reading will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9, at 1 p.m. and will last about an hour. There’s no charge, and kids (and grownups!) of all ages are welcome. The event will include a snack and craft, and Befana herself will read the story!

The story is based on the lore of Befana, a Christmas witch in Italy. Legend has it that Befana flies across the sky on Twelfth Night, leaving cakes and cookies for children as they sleep. Being a good housekeeper, many say she will sweep the floor before she leaves. To some, the sweeping means the sweeping away of the problems of the year. The child’s family typically leaves a small glass of wine and a plate with a few morsels of food, often regional or local, for Befana.

A NOTE FROM JANE: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper. Because the Gazette is mainly reader-supported, I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks my way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. Check out the donation page here. Thank you so much for your support. -jb
Very cool! Our kids did the Italian “Holidays around the World” at OMP elementary, which included this story!
A family fave!
