The First Congregational Church at the base of Old Mission Peninsula has a wonderful series called “The Mel Larimer Concert Series,” which brings together Grand Traverse area musicians to perform great music. On Sunday, Dec. 17, at 2 p.m., the series will feature “See Amid The Winter’s Snow: A Dan Forrest Choral Festival.”

The concert will feature a 250-voice choir and orchestra performing a wonderful collection of Dan Forrest’s sacred, secular and holiday pieces, with the composer himself at the piano. Read more about this acclaimed composer here. The concert will feature:

  • Grand Traverse Area Festival Choir, directed by Russ Larimer
  • NMC Chamber Singers & Chorale, directed by Jeffrey Cobb
  • TC WSH Chorale, directed by Erich Wangeman
  • TC CHS Chorale & Choral-Aires, directed by Tamara Williams
  • Glen Lake HS “North by Northwest,” directed by Ashley Larimer-Kelly

As a musical gift to the Traverse City region, there are no admission fees for Mel Larimer Concert Series events; however, donations at the door help to inspire and fund future events.

Reservations are required, as there will be limited seating for this event. Reserve your seats here.

Mel Larimer was the beloved Director of Music and conductor of Traverse City’s First Congregational Church Sanctuary Choir from 1997 to 2008. Bringing together Grand Traverse regional musicians to perform major choral/orchestral masterworks was always a major part of his fondest wishes and goals for our community. When he passed in 2008, the Mel Larimer Concert Series Memorial Fund was established so that our community could carry on this worthy aspiration.

The over-arching goal of the Mel Larimer Concert is to bring together Grand Traverse area musicians to perform great music. All vocalists who are up to the challenge and can fulfill rehearsal requirements are welcome to participate. Masterworks selected may include music of various world cultures, creeds and historical origins, and can be from sacred or secular choral traditions.

The Mel Larimer Concerts are outreach events offered to individuals and established public and private institutions as a community service. As custodian of the Mel Larimer Concert Series, the Traverse City First Congregational Church is pleased to host these events where appropriate.

The First Congregational Church is located at 6105 Center Road, Traverse City, Michigan 49686. For more info, visit the church’s website, call (231) 947-6698 or email [email protected].
