August 9, 2015: Apples Damaged by Hail

An apple damaged by hail in the MegaStorm of Summer 2015 | Jane Boursaw Photo

The MegaStorm that ripped through northern Michigan last week not only left trees down, roads impassable, power lines strewn everywhere, and homes and cars damaged, it also wiped out the entire apple crop of local farmers — and much of the grape crop, I’ve heard.

After church today, Mom and I went two-tracking through the farm (as we love to do), and I snapped this picture of a damaged apple up by my niece Heather’s house. I couldn’t find one apple that didn’t have some damage. Whether they can still be used for juice or not, someone in the know tell us in the comments below.

A lifelong resident of the Old Mission Peninsula, Jane grew up on a cherry farm (Johnson Farms), married the boy next door (Tim Boursaw), and raised two kids there (Will and Marissa). Her 35-year career as a photojournalist includes bylines with the New York Times and Ladies' Home Journal, and interviews with Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts. But she loves writing about the OMP most of all.
