My mom always gauged the weather by how well you could see across the bay. “You can’t even see across the bay,” she still says to this day. And all through my childhood.
And really, that’s basically all you need to know, right? I grew up on East Bay in Old Mission, and if it was winter and you could see across the bay, well, it wasn’t too bad out there.
If you could see the bay, but not all the way across the bay to Elk Rapids, things weren’t so good, but you could probably drive to town if you needed to.
If you couldn’t see the bay at all – which was about a hundred yards from our front door – don’t go outside because the weather is awful out there!
I still live on East Bay – about ten miles down the road from my mom – and now I do the same thing. “You can’t even see across the bay,” I said to Tim this morning. Sure enough, the weather app on my phone confirmed that the weather was awful out there.
