There’s nothing like a wonderful old barn. The Old Mission Peninsula does not have a cartel on gorgeous barns. Drive anywhere in northern Michigan, and you’ll find beautiful big barns, many of them newly restored – which I love to see.
Our “home barn” in Mapleton is a working building that houses lots of horses and equipment. I always love going up there to check out the horses and recall good times of making hay forts and taking care of my own horse, Copper, when I was a kid.

Before my dad died, we went through the barn with a tape recorder and he gave me a little historical tour. Will have to transcribe my notes at some point. (Yes, I realize Dad died in 2004. These things take time.)
The one pictured above is from our Kingsley/Manton Road Trip. If you go to Kingsley (from Traverse City) and turn left, this barn is down the road a ways on the right-hand side. The traffic was pretty heavy that day, so I risked life and limb to get this picture. It was worth it.
