Chicken BBQ at Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church

Saturday, June 25, 2016, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., 16426 Center Road (M37)

Old Mission Gazette is Reader Supported.

The best grilled chicken around, with all the fixins’ – including baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw, homemade desserts and Annie’s Cherry Whatchamacallit (Nope! We’re not telling you what that is – you’ll have to come see for yourself).

Looks like a great weather forecast, and if you’re not into warm temps, there’s A/C inside the church! A great day for a beautiful drive to the “church on the hill.”

Log Cabin Day

Sunday, June 26, 2016, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The annual “Log Cabin Day” is a celebration of our Old Mission Peninsula heritage and the Hessler Log Home, which is located next to Mission Point Lighthouse at the end of Center Road (M37). The log home was moved to the lighthouse years ago, and a group of passionate OMP residents restored it with historical accuracy.

The Hessler Log Home will be open to the public, with music, crafters, historic re-enactors, stories and more at Mission Point Lighthouse.

The Dougherty Mission House (on Old Mission Road, just past the Old Mission General Store on the left) will also be open to the public, with tours and a strawberry ice cream social.

And if you need a log home contractor, be sure to check out Joseph and Mary Hessler, proprietors of Hessler Log Home Construction, established in 1856. Dedicated and experienced, this couple knows log homes and uses only the very best quality materials sourced locally right on the Old Mission Peninsula. (Ok, this is my attempt to be clever and announce the opening of Old Mission Gazette’s online shop! Click through HERE to learn more and buy cool OMP stuff – including OMP bumper stickers, as well as Hessler Log Home Construction and M37 merchandise, and more.)

Father Fred 24th Annual Motorcycle Ride

Sunday, June 26, 2016

This annual charity ride for the Father Fred organization leaves Classic Motors in Traverse City at 11 a.m., riding up the Old Mission Peninsula to Mission Point Lighthouse and back. The ride will once again be escorted by local law enforcement, so be on the lookout for them!

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
