As of today, around 11 p.m. tonight, I’ll have been on the planet for 56 years. I was born smack dab in the middle of cherry season, and rumor has it my dad (Walter Johnson) even took time off from the harvest to go to the hospital with my mom (Mary Johnson).
My mom’s mom, Mary Louise McKesson (a.k.a. “Mammy”), came north from Virginia to help out, as well, which I’m sure was most welcome with three other kids at home. I was the last of four kids (Dean, Carol and Ward paving the way for me), so having a baby was probably old hat for my parents by that time.

I’m happy to have made it this far in this crazy world, and what better way to celebrate than with some of my favorite ice cream – Blueberry Hill from Buchan’s Blueberry Hill Farm (and on my grandma Stella Johnson’s vintage Formica table, no less). I grew up with the Buchan kids – LaVonda was in my class – and they’re truly one of the nicest families on the planet.
I have all our class photos from Old Mission Peninsula School – this would have been circa 1960s and 1970s – so I’ll dig those out and post them on Old Mission Gazette at some point. I’m sure all my classmates will love that! 🙂
My favorite of Buchan’s ice cream flavors is blueberry (as noted in the above photo) – it’s heavenly – but they have a wide variety of flavors, including apple pie, which is made with their home-made apple pie.
Buchan’s Blueberry Hill offers pick-your-own blueberries, apples and peaches (whatever’s in season), fresh home-made ice cream made with their own fruit, fresh pressed apple cider in season (non-pasteurized), fresh-picked veggies grown on their farm, fresh-baked pies, pastries and other goodies.
Market hours are Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sundays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. U-pick hours may vary, so call ahead before heading over there.
Buchan’s Blueberry Hill is located at 1472 Nelson Road on the Old Mission Peninsula, about seven miles out Peninsula Drive. Contact them at (231) 223-4846 or email [email protected].
I did not know. Gonna have to get some
It’s the best! You can visit their farm, but they also have a wide assortment of Buchan’s ice cream at Peninsula Market.
There’s no calories if it’s locally made right here on the OMP. Completely guilt-free. 🙂 – jb
Just two subs south. I should probably not know this. Yikes
Grandma told me calories didn’t count on Sunday .
I like that about ice cream on Sundays!!!!
Lori ‘s ice cream is the best! I have two favorites: lavender and coffee.
Ooh, haven’t tried those! I’m so enamored with the blueberry, but will make a point to work my way through the others. – jb
Best ice cream in town!!
Today is National Ice Cream Day! We should all eat some Buchan’s ice cream!!
Do you remember hanging McFarland’s ice cream out of our dorm window hoping the Mt.P bitter cold would keep it frozen??? ?
Did it work? 🙂 – jb
Old Mission Gazette NO–didn’t work–chocolate ice cream melted down the building from the third floor window ?
Who knew the brick building itself would be warm enough to melt ice cream in the snowy weather?? Our major wasn’t science! We should have eaten the whole thing and avoided the situation!
Lol. It seems like it would work to me! But it’s never a bad idea to eat all the ice cream. 🙂 -jb
THE best. Hands down.
[…] up chocolate sundaes made with Buchan’s delicious ice cream (see how much we love it over here)! Donations are appreciated and will go to Peninsula Community Library. Thank you, Anne and […]
