As we posted last week, the newly-formed Old Mission Peninsula Education Foundation has submitted a bid to purchase the Old Mission Peninsula School (OMPS).

The offer of $750,000 for the building, contents and property has now been submitted to TCAPs by the Foundation, a community-based non-profit formed in September 2016 to support education programming on Old Mission Peninsula.

An informational community meeting is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m. at the Peninsula Township Hall. Discussion will take place regarding next steps for the school and purchase.

The topic is also on the agenda for the TCAPS Board meeting on Monday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. at the Ida Tompkins Administration Building, 412 Webster Street in Traverse City.

Specifically, “Letter of Intent – Old Mission Peninsula School” is listed on the agenda under “Superintendent’s Report.”

Also on the TCAPS Board meeting agenda is discussion regarding the adoption of board policy language concerning “Disposition of Real Property,” “Disposition of Obsolete Property,” and “Property Inventory.” “Disposal of District Property” is included in the board packet for informational purposes.

The Board will also discuss and consider approval of moving Eastern Elementary to Bertha Vos during Spring Break (March 27-31, 2017) in an effort to provide a longer timeline for the reconstruction process.

There will be time for public comment at the TCAPS Board meeting. See the full agenda and packet here.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
