Continuing our Power Island theme (see here and here), here’s a shot from the top of Winery Hill (aka Chateau Grand Traverse). There were SO.MANY.PEOPLE there today – which is cool because it really is a breathtaking view. In this photo, you can see the vineyards, then the north end of Power Island and little Bassett Island, and then the Leelanau Peninsula beyond.
I’m not sure if there are any Carrolls in the house across the road anymore, but I kept thinking they could charge people to park in their driveway or something. Bernie Carroll and his wife Beverly lived there all the time I was growing up.
They were such nice people, and Bernie was a bus driver at Old Mission Peninsula School. Bill Welhusen was my bus driver (he and his wife Mary Louise lived up on the Ridgewood past Haserot Beach), but I did ride Bernie’s bus during apple season when I got off at my grandma’s house across from PFE (Peninsula Fruit Exchange). That’s where our apple orchard was/still is.
