Having been on the receiving end of a fundraiser recently, I know first-hand how important these powerful gestures of community support are during times of crisis or when you’re working for a cause about which you’re passionate.
Here are a few ways to help out your Old Mission Peninsula neighbors. If you have a fundraiser going right now that I’ve missed, feel free to leave a link and brief synopsis in the comments section at the bottom of this post.
Old Mission Gazette is Reader Supported.

ERIN BANTON / TEAM BANTON: STRONGER THAN EVER
In June 2015, at age 34, Erin Banton was diagnosed with Stage I Breast Cancer. With support from her community and family, Erin came out on top. Less than two years later, in May 2017, Erin was diagnosed with Stage IV Metastatic Breast Cancer. This fundraiser will help Erin and Travis (Kathy Fouch’s son/Howard and Ann Fouch’s grandson) with medical expenses and loss of wages from their full time jobs (Erin is a teacher at OMPS), as they care for their three boys and put Erin’s health first.
Learn more about the fundraiser and donate here, help with meals here, and order a Team Banton T-shirt here (orders are due by July 31). Follow Erin’s journey via her blog here.
There is also a fundraiser for Erin at Bowers Harbor Vineyards on Aug. 3, 2017. Learn more here.
VELMA CISNEROS / FUNERAL EXPENSES
A beloved member of the Old Mission Peninsula community for many years, Velma Cisneros passed away unexpectedly on July 8, 2017. Her family is hoping to raise $10,000 to help out with funeral and travel expenses. Learn more and donate here.
WENDY WARREN / WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S
After losing her husband Gary Warren to Early Onset Alzheimer’s, OMP resident Wendy Warren has worked tirelessly to raise awareness and funds to help end Alzheimer’s. She will be participating in the annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Sept. 30, 2017 with “Gary’s Gang,” and is asking folks to consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Association through her fundraising page. Learn more and donate here.
Wendy is also inviting folks to join her at “Painting With a Twist” on August 10, 7-9 p.m. for an Alzheimer’s fundraiser. Tickets are $35 and you get to paint with friends! More details here.
SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.
Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
