Peninsula Drive Flamingo | Thomas Barrows Photo
Feel free to share this post...

If you’ve driven along Peninsula Drive lately, you might have noticed a tropical trend on one of the mailboxes. A flamingo, in fact!

OMP resident Thomas Barrows just sent me this photo of the colorful bird masquerading as a mailbox, which I think is amazing because you never expect to see a flamingo in northern Michigan. And he said the owner of this particular mailbox gave him a very cheery wave.

Here’s how it went down when Tim and I drove past the leggy bird on our way out of town yesterday:

Me: Oh, look! A flamingo! That’s awesome!

Tim: A flamingo! That’s awful! I wonder what the neighbors think!

Whichever way you go on the bird, I’m hoping it’s colorful enough to survive the snowplows next winter. We’ll see! And then won’t we be super happy to see a flamingo on our way out of town, when all around us is snow and cold!?

Thanks, Thomas, for today’s Photo of the Day!
