“I have counted 136 different kinds of weather inside of 24 hours!” – Mark Twain

Well, the weather certainly has run the gamut here over the past few weeks. I think we have seen everything from beach days to rain to snow – just a normal fall in northern Michigan.

Of course, interpretations of weather are very relative. We just returned from a trip to Alabama where my four-year-old grandson noted on a 52-degree morning that everyone but us had coats and hats on – shades of his mother, who on a family trip to southern Texas when she was about the same age also saw that people had coats on when we did not. Her comment? “What! Do they think it is cold or something?” The answer – yes, they do!

LIBRARY SNOW DAYS

Just a reminder as we enter this period of unpredictable weather that Peninsula Community Library (PCL) is also closed when Traverse City Area Public Schools is closed due to weather. There may be occasions, as well, when we may close early due to unexpected storms, snow and ice. We want to keep our staff and patrons safe. If you are in doubt, call the library at (231) 223-7700. If you get voicemail, we are closed. Thanks for understanding! If you have an item due when we are closed, know that we backdate check-ins to the last date we were open. If you feel you have accrued unwarranted fines, just let us know!

LIBRARY HAPPENINGS

Programming this week includes our 5toOne playgroup on Thursday, Nov. 16, 9:30 a.m., and Pageturners at 6:30 p.m. that same day. On Saturday, Nov. 18, our mother daughter book club, Chapter Chicks, gathers at 9:30 a.m. for discussion, a craft and light breakfast. Looking ahead, on Monday, Nov. 27 at 11 a.m., Mary Morgan will show us how to use various search engines on a computer or other device. Bring a brown bag lunch, and dessert is on us!

PCL will be closed next week on Thanksgiving Day and Black Friday. We will be open normal hours Saturday, Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

UPDATE ON THE NEW LIBRARY

I want to thank all of you have made end-of-year gifts to our building fund which stands at $1.6 million – well on our way to our $2.5 million goal. I am overwhelmed by your love for our small community library!

Please give generously this season. PCL is a beloved gathering place for all Old Mission Peninsula residents! Donations may be made out to “PCL Building Fund” and sent to Peninsula Community Library, 2699 Island View Road, Traverse City, MI 49686. Read more about the new library here and a recent donation from Tom’s Food Markets here. We are building the heart of the community!

LIBRARY JOB OPP

A very rare opportunity is available here at Peninsula Community Library to join, beginning in January, the special family that is my staff. The schedule being offered is Monday 2:30-8, Tuesday 9-1, Thursday 9-2:30, and the first and fourth Saturdays of the month from 9-1.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable with computers and everyday technology, organized, patient, able to think creatively, and most importantly here at PCL, good with people of all ages. They need not have library experience, as we will offer staff training. I am especially interested in someone who is good with children to alternate with me in leading our preschool story hour a few times a month!

The hourly wage is $10.50/hour, and the staff freely trades hours as needed for time off. The benefits? Working in a great environment where your community loves you! I will not be accepting inquiries by phone or in person. Please send me, via email, a resume with cover letter to [email protected]. PCL is a great place to work!

“Well the weather outside is frightful,
But the fire is so delightful
But since we’ve no place to go,
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!”

Whether you love to play in the snow or hunker down inside in front of the fire, be sure to check out our collection of books, movies and music, as well as programming for all!

Happy Thanksgiving!

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
