At last week’s Peninsula Township Board meeting, the board honored the many years of service of former fire chiefs Rich VanderMey and Randy Rittenhouse.

While Rittenhouse was unable to attend, VanderMey was present and accepted a plaque for his years as Fire Chief of the Peninsula Fire Department. Current and former members of the fire department were present, as well as Traverse City Fire Chief Jim Tuller.

Also at the meeting, the Board approved the purchase of dress uniforms for the Fire Department. Thirteen individuals will be receiving full uniforms, with six new members receiving partial uniforms after one year of service in the department.

The Board also approved two upcoming races – the 36th Annual Bayshore Marathon on Saturday, May 26, 2018, and the Endurance Evolution Triathlon on Sunday, August 19, 2018.

The Bayshore Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K will take place on East Shore Drive, Center Road and Bluff Road, from 7:15 a.m. to approximately 1:15 p.m. Up to 7250 runners will be on the roads, which will be closed to traffic during the race. For more info, visit their website here.

The Endurance Evolution Triathlon will involve swimming in the Bowers Harbor area, as well as biking and running on multiple Peninsula Township roads. For more information, visit their website here.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
