The Friends of Peninsula Community Library have announced the dates for this year’s Silent Auction to benefit Peninsula Community Library’s new building project. The auction will kick off with a “Mocktail Party” on May 7, 7 p.m. at the library, currently located inside Old Mission Peninsula School, 2699 Island View Road on the Old Mission Peninsula.

The kick-off party will include hors d’oeuvres and nonalcoholic drinks, and you’ll also have the opportunity to view all the Silent Auction items and begin placing bids. Bill Pierce will serve as bartender, with lovely background music provided by Bill Davy.

Old Mission Gazette is Reader Supported.

Participants are also invited to dress like Scott and Zelda to celebrate the event. Library director Vicki Shurly has promised to be the ultimate Gatsby girl, pearls and all!

The auction will continue through the week, and bids will be accepted until Friday, May 11 at 3 p.m. Winning bids will be announced that evening or on Saturday.

Silent auction items include collectibles, gift certificates, books and games, arts and crafts, Old Mission Peninsula products and much more. Old Mission Gazette has happily donated a selection of items from our sister site, Old Mission Peninsula Store, including OMP hats, greeting cards, an OMP calendar, car stickers, and photo prints by yours truly.

Peninsula Community Library’s building fund currently stands at $1.9 million. The Peninsula Township Board recently  approved a special use permit for the new building, to be located on the corner of Center Road and Island View Road. For more information, contact the library at (231) 223-7700.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
