The 4th Annual Old Mission Parade, a.k.a. Bay Street Parade, took place on Sunday, July 1, 2018. As in previous years, the parade featured a fun mix of homespun floats, antique cars, kids on bikes and animals decked out in patriotic colors.
The parade began at the corner of Bay Street and Swaney Road, heading down Bay Street to Woodland Road, left on Traverse Street and ending at the American Legion Hall. The event included a special acknowledgement to veterans and military service members.

The Peninsula Fire Department showed up with a fire truck and ambulance, which brought the kids running to climb into the truck and try on a firefighter’s hat.
The event also included acknowledgements to those no longer with us, including long-time Bay Street resident Jan Mlujeak who recently passed away. The Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society will plant a tree in her honor, to be located on Center Road near Eiman Road. A plaque with her name will be installed at the tree, as well.
Organizer Connie Rohl-Parliament, who served as this year’s Grand Marshall along with her husband Doug, thanked all of her friends, family and neighbors who helped make the day a big success. “It was a wonderful day!”
Here are a few photos from the fun event.
SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.
Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
