The annual Summer Used Book Sale, a fundraiser for Peninsula Community Library, is in full swing, and to kick things up a notch, they’re offering reduced prices beginning today. You can buy a bag of books for $5! And they’ll even supply the bags!

Sponsored by the Friends of Peninsula Community Library non-profit group, the sale runs through August 8, and organizer Gail Williams says they’ve sold a lot of books so far, but there are still plenty left (this is the largest amount of books they’ve had since starting the sale years ago). Here are the hours of the sale:

  • Monday & Thursday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 9 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

The book sale is taking place at Peninsula Community Library, which is currently located in Old Mission Peninsula School, 2699 Island View Road on the Old Mission Peninsula.

The book sale is also a fundraiser for the library, which is currently in the midst of raising funds to build a new library at the corner of Island View Road and Center Road.

Their capital campaign tagline is “Building the Heart of the Community,” and no truer words could be spoken for such a beautiful part of our Old Mission Peninsula community dating back into the 1800s.

As many of you know, my mom, Mary Johnson, was a member of the Library Board who had the foresight back in the 1990s to purchase the five acres where the new library will be located. She has been very determined to build that library in her lifetime, and, well, she turns 94 in December! But I know we, as a community, can make this happen. For both mom and our community.

The new Library is being funded exclusively with donations; there are no tax dollars or bond issues involved. Check out the architectural plans and renderings here. It will be stunning addition to the OMP community, and it truly is a community effort.

For more information on how to donate, visit the library’s website, call the library, (231) 223-7700, or call Library Trustee John Bercini, (630) 235-1475. He is happy to answer questions and provide any info you might need.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
