This Photo of the Day is actually from May, when we spotted at least a dozen baby foxes living in a den under my mom’s driveway in Old Mission. I couldn’t let another day go by without getting them on the Gazette.
The adorable animals didn’t seem too concerned when we stopped by to take some photos – but kept a good distance so as not to disturb them. At the opening of the den, there appeared to be remnants of some poor creature who’d become fox food.
There have been a lot of fox sightings around the Old Mission Peninsula this year. The farmers love it, because the fox eat other animals who chew up the trees and cause other damage to farms.
Glad to have found your site. My grandparents and parents built two small cottages next to the Andrus farm in the 60’s. Then my father, Gerald Cooper bought the big farm house from the Lardies, across from the Old Mission store, where my mom worked for 10 years in the 70’s and 80’s. I graduated from Northwestern nursing school in the 70’s. I sure miss the peninsula but love taking rides out that way. We stopped by the old farm house a few years back when the kids were having a lemonade sale.

2017 must have been a good fall for foxes because I have heard about several dens with large brewds. We had a den with four pups under our storage shed this winter. I haven’t seen them this summer, but we have definitely heard them visiting us at night. The squeal the mother makes sounds like a woman screaming in the middle of the night. I am happy to have them around to control the chipmunk and mice populations.
