Friends and supporters of the NEW Peninsula Community Library have been working hard to bring the new library, to be constructed on the corner of Island View Road and Center Road, to fruition, but we still have a ways to go. Here’s an update on our current status and how YOU can help get us to the finish line…

Where Are We In Building the Heart of the Community?

The final drawings and specifications for the new library are ready. Cornwell Architects has been wonderful to work with and has finished up with three of five stages: schematic design, design development and construction documents.

They are ready to send things out for bid and, ultimately, administer construction. Several construction companies have requested to bid on the project, in spite of the current building boom here in Grand Traverse County.

Library Design, a company specializing exclusively in libraries, has been hired to supervise the aesthetics’ of the interior of the building. Who does what? Mark Humitz, President of Cornwell Architects, put it this way:

“If you turn the building upside down, anything still attached at the top is the architect’s domain. Anything that falls to the floor is the interior designer.”

Together with the contractors, these two entities will assure a community library that is a functional, as well as beautiful, place to gather as a community.

What are we waiting on then? The goal of the campaign is to raise $2.5 million dollars. We are at approximately $2 million – 80% of the way. Your help is needed NOW! (UPDATE: As of Nov. 20, 2018, they have raised $2.2 million. – ed.)

Urgent Request for Donations!

It is imperative that we raise the remaining funds soon; otherwise, items like the community room will simply not be possible at this time. We need to start construction now.

We have signed a lease with the new Old Mission Peninsula School through June 2019. If we can break ground in October 2018, we will meet our goal.

Please give! A library is a community gathering place for all in our community. It is a gift from the Old Mission residents of today to the Old Mission residents of tomorrow.
