The Neahtawanta Inn has been hosting a Full Moon Supper series throughout the summer and fall, and there are a few spots open at the upcoming Wednesday, October 24 event.

I had the opportunity to attend one of the recent Full Moon Suppers, and it was a lovely evening of amazing (and healthy!) food and great conversation in one of the most beautiful settings in northern Michigan – the Neahtawanta Inn.

Dinners by Healthy Chef Ali Lopez are served overlooking Bowers Harbor from the grounds of the Inn. Each event features four to five vegetarian courses, beginning with hors d’oeuvres on the porch, weather permitting. Menus are written just before the meal, reflecting the season’s offerings, and utilizing the best from local area farms.

As an example, the menu for the Full Moon Supper I attended on Sept. 24 included:

  • Common Good Bakery French Peasant Bread with Loma Farm Butternut Squash Spread
  • Loma Farm Roasted Leek and Zucchini Soup
  • Fall Salad with Loma Farm Kale, Cabbage, Golden Beets and Delicata Squash with apple cider vinaigrette
  • Loma Farm Fingerling Potatoes and Rainbow Carrots on a bed of herby lentils
  • Local Michigan Apple Crumble with Maple Cream

The meals are scheduled so that participants can be on the beach or the dock for the moonrise. If the moon is obscured by clouds or rain, participants still gather to enjoy extraordinary food and good company.

We saw a sliver of the moon the night I was there, but it was fun crowding out into the yard to try and catch a glimpse of it. Weather for Oct. 24 is partly cloudy with no precipitation expected, so there’s a great chance you will see the moon!

The cost of the Full Moon Supper is $50 per person, (not including gratuity). You’re welcome to bring a beverage of choice, and they will throw it on ice there.

The upcoming Full Moon Supper will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 6:30 – 10 p.m. at the Neahtawanta Inn, 1308 Neahtawanta Road on the Old Mission Peninsula.

Registration is open for the October 24 event, the last scheduled supper of the season. To register, email Ali Lopez, [email protected], with the number in your party, any dietary restrictions you or your guests may have, and a number where you can be reached. You will receive a confirmation via email.

If you would like to spend the night at Neahtawanta Inn, contact Sally Van Vleck for availability, [email protected].

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
