Last year, we ran a story about the teenage dances that took place at the Grange Hall (now Township Hall) back in the 1950s. You can read that story here.

Along with the story, we ran a photo supplied by Jan Schavey Goodman, who attended the monthly dances, held on the main floor of the hall (where the township meetings are held now). They also had live music, “mostly garage bands of peers,” said Jan.

She added that her sister’s wedding reception was held there in 1955, with dancing upstairs and tables for dining downstairs.

When we ran the story in November, we didn’t have all the names of the folks in the photo, but with the help of Jan, now we do. Or at least most of them.

Take a look and see if you or your kin are in there. If you can supply any missing names, tell us in the comments section at the bottom of this story.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette

  1. Second row, the ?? Longcore first name is Gary. (My uncle) Love this picture! I kinda stole it for my mom’s 80th birthday party coming up. (Katy Longcore)

  2. The Kroupa family must have been a big one. I found this site when I was looking for old dances we used to do. I immediately noticed the Grange mention since here in New England the Grange is still active.

    • That’s very cool that the Grange is still active in your neck of the woods. I’m thinking there are places around Michigan where that’s the case, but not here on the Old Mission Peninsula. (Yep – there are lots of Kroupas!)
