After many years of thinking about it and wanting to do it but never doing it, I joined the Pageturners Book Club last year. This is the book club of Peninsula Community Library, helmed by Carol Olson, who not only does a great job of picking fantastic and diverse books, but also supplies tasty snacks tied to whatever book we’re reading.
Right now we’re reading The Perfume Collector, a lovely story by Kathleen Tessaro about a 1950s London socialite who receives a surprise inheritance from a complete stranger. We’ll discuss this book at the next meeting on January 17, 6:30 p.m. at the library. And I can’t wait to see what snacks Carol brings.

Upcoming Pageturners Books & Meetings:
Feb. 21: Last Bus to Wisdom by Ivan Doig. This story takes place in the summer of 1951 and follows 11-year-old Donal Cameron, who lives in the Montana Rockies with his grandmother. When she has to have surgery, she ships him off to her sister Kate in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Things don’t work out as planned, and Donal finds himself on a road trip back to Montana with Kate’s husband, Herman the German.
March 21: The Lost Carousel of Provence by Juliet Blackwell. This book tells the story of American photographer Cady Drake, who finds herself drawn to the crumbling Château Clement in Provence, where she explores the history of an antique carousel that holds secrets to the past.
Pageturners Book Club is really fun because not only do you get to read interesting books – some of which probably wouldn’t be in your normal realm of books to read – but you also get to have fun discussions about the books with other people who love to read.
You don’t have to buy the books either, because Carol orders enough so that book club members can borrow a copy to read and then return it.
Pageturners Book Club meets on the third Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. at Peninsula Community Library.
SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.
Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette

I am so glad I joined (and, um, have to get cracking on Last Bus to Wisdom)! Reading and meeting with the book club is such a nice diversion from the day to day stuff. Thank you for being such a great book club leader, Carol.
