Today’s Photo of the Day is courtesy of this sweet Snowy Owl spotted on Center Road just north of the Old Mission Tavern (which, by the way, is closed until April 15).
Some of my photographer pals have been posting owl photos here and there, but this is my first sighting of the season. And it’s always such a thrill. They’re so other-worldly looking.

I’m not one of those photographers who keeps their location a closely-guarded secret, because I think everyone deserves to see these Snowy Owls around the Old Mission Peninsula. But I would just encourage you to be respectful if you’re taking photos of these lovely creatures.
I’ve found that they’re pretty patient if you’re careful about not getting too close (a long telephoto lens is an asset here). But if there’s too much commotion, they’ll spread their big wings and fly off.

We saw one up at the Lighthouse State Park over the Martin Luther King Holiday weekend. They are so beautiful. 🙂
