The Grand Traverse County Road Commission will be removing high ridges along many Old Mission Peninsula roads this week, beginning today, May 20, 2019.

The work will include removing excess materials along roadways, including sand, dirt, gravel and grass growing within the county road right-of-way shoulders. The process will start with a tractor roto-tilling the high ridge material, followed by the final grade and shoulder work.

Peninsula Township roads where the work will be done include:

  • Blue Water Road
  • Center Road
  • Devils Dive Road
  • Gray Road
  • Island View Road
  • Kroupa Road
  • Ladd Road
  • McKinley Road
  • Mission Road
  • Montague Road
  • Nelson Road
  • Old Mission Road
  • Seven Hills Road
  • Smokey Hollow Road
  • Wilson Road

According to a press release received by Old Mission Gazette, this work will allow the water to properly drain off the road and into the shoulder area. Also, the release notes, puddling and icing during the winter season will be minimized, improving the safety of all road users.

The Road Commission is advising residents along the Peninsula roads where the work is being done to remove all items physically located within the right-of-way. Work is starting at the south end of Peninsula Township and will continue throughout the week heading north.

The Road Commission will assume no liability for items remaining in the right-of-way that are damaged. From the press release:

Our machines do not slow down for sprinkler heads. Front slopes of the ditch will not be reseeded. There will be voluntary growth of the grass outside of the exposed gravel underneath the grass build up (high ridge) from the original construction.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact Road Commission manager Brad Kluczynski, (231) 922-4848, ext. 215, or email [email protected].

A NOTE FROM JANE: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper. Because the Gazette is mainly reader-supported, I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks my way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. Check out the donation page here. Thank you so much for your support. -jb
