It’s that time again! The Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church is hosting their Annual Chicken BBQ on Saturday, June 22, 2019, 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., at the church, 16426 Center Road on the Old Mission Peninsula.

The church is located on Center Road about 14 miles out from “The Forks” (intersection of Center Road and Peninsula Drive in by town). If you see the Old Mission Tavern, you’ve gone about a half-mile too far.

Honestly, I’m not sure what their secret is, but this chicken is, without a doubt, the best I’ve ever had. Part of the deliciousness is that the guys cook it over an open fire in the BBQ pit right there at the church.

The best-chicken-you’ve-ever-had is accompanied by a legacy of church recipes, including Lucille Lindsey’s coleslaw, Annie Fouch’s Cherry Whatchamacallit, baked beans, dinner rolls, a beverage, and the church ladies’ array of the best home-made desserts in all the land.

Seriously. Methodists can cook. When everything else in the world is in question, we can be sure of that fact.

Take-outs are available by calling (231) 223-4393, and a free will donation is much appreciated.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
