“Change is the law of life. And those who look only to the past or present are certain to miss the future.” – John F. Kennedy

Change is certainly happening here at Peninsula Community Library (PCL)! While it is okay to be a little bit sad about leaving behind a past that was happy, thanks to all of you, PCL is looking forward to a bright future in our beautiful new building!

The Library Board and Staff are very grateful to our Old Mission Peninsula School family for allowing us to stay beyond our lease. We know however, that they have a great future to plan for, as well! Changes are scheduled soon for the space we are vacating.

Closing Time – How You Can Help

PCL will close to the public at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 29. The staff will be packing up and cleaning out from July 1 through July 15. Books will be packed into sealed and labeled boxes so that they can easily be re-shelved in their new home.

Many of you have asked how you can help, and here is where you can pitch in! Our new space will not be ready to move things into until the middle of August. We need many volunteers to “adopt” sealed and labeled boxes of books. You may either take them home and keep them sealed in a safe and dry place for a month, or if you cannot, we will have storage space where you can take them.

When the shelves are up in the new library, you can bring the boxes to the new building, where staff will place them in their new home. If you can help out in this way, please email me, [email protected], with your name and telephone number, and we will contact you.

On July 10, we will have you drive up in the circle of the school, where a team will load up your car with the pre-agreed upon number of boxes. We also need some strong and able people to help load – a great job for your teens! Let me know about that, as well!

Progress Report on the New Library

Where are we in building “The Heart of the Community”? We are close! See photos of the construction progress here.

Drywall is being installed, siding is being put up, and primer coats of paint are going on. Furniture and shelving are set to be delivered and installed the week of August 17. The tentative date for occupancy is August 23, with a grand opening to follow soon afterward. We will keep you in the loop!

Many thanks to all of you for your patience with us while we make this transition. As of today, holds may no longer be placed on PCL items. We encourage you to use the other friendly libraries in our area – The Traverse Area District Library on Woodmere, East Bay Branch Library, Kingsley Branch Library, Interlochen Public Library and Fife Lake Public Library. It is a great time for a library road trip!

You may temporarily change your hold pick up location to the library of your choice. If you receive a notice that you have a hold here, you will need to pick it up promptly. Our last delivery of books from other libraries is this Thursday, June 20.

If you have any questions during this transition, please do not hesitate to email me. I plan on maintaining my current office until I have space available in the new building. Thanks to all of you, the dream is almost a reality! Happy summer!

“Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.” – Harriet Tubman

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
