If you’ve been following along here on Old Mission Gazette, you know we’re getting super close to moving into the NEW Peninsula Community Library. It’s not far away – the official opening date is Monday, Sept. 7, 2019, but look for more details about that here on the Gazette this coming week.
Right now, however, the staff and volunteers are getting ready to move books and other things into the new library and Carriage House next door.
Old Mission Gazette is Reader Supported.

Library Director Vicki Shurly says she now has the all-clear from Grand Traverse Construction to start moving things in on Monday, Aug. 26 (yes, two days from now). Book boxes will be moved directly to the stacks area, while all other items and furniture will be moved into the Carriage House for now (directly to the left of the new library).
If you’re able to help, meet in the parking lot of the new library on the corner of Center Road and Island View Road on Monday, Aug. 26, at 9 a.m. If you are transporting things that you have stored on your own and need help, let her know by emailing [email protected].
They will need trailers, pickups, vans, etc., if you have them, as well as dollies. Strong arms and backs are also important! 😉
Rumor has it there will also be a pizza lunch at noon. One additional perk is that you get to see the inside of the library before the grand opening. I will also be there taking pictures, so maybe I’ll see you there!
“I am so very grateful to all of you,” says Vicki. “You ARE Peninsula Community Library! Thanks so much!”
If you have any questions, feel free to email Vicki at [email protected].
SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.
Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
