As you’re heading north on Center Road, just before you get to Island View Road, there’s a lovely little farm stand on the left that you might miss if you’re not looking for it.

Island View Vineyard has a variety of fresh produce and flowers throughout the summer and fall months, including the luscious pears that are available there right now.

I believe these are Bartlett pears, but could be wrong on that. There are a lot of pear varieties out there, but these are the pears I remember as a kid growing up on Johnson Farms on the OMP – sweet, with just the right amount of juiciness (as Goldilocks said, not too hard and not too soft).

I stopped by Island View Vineyard’s farm stand a few days ago, and at the time, they also had plums (which we’ve always called “prunes” – Gazette story forthcoming), grapes and peaches.

Margrit Kuehnis is the proprietor of this artistic farm stand, and you can reach her at (231) 223-4642.

As always, a big thank you to Margrit and all the OMP farmers who keep us supplied with fresh fruits, veggies, herbs, flowers, jams, honey, maple syrup and more throughout the year.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
