An electrical fire at Old Mission Peninsula School has resulted in the school being closed this week until the situation is remedied. The fire was due to a bird flying into a transformer.
Staff said they noticed the smell of an electrical fire on Monday morning as kids were arriving at school. Further investigation revealed that a breaker box was smoking, at which point students were led out of the building onto the playground, where they awaited pickup by parents.
At last night’s Peninsula Township Board meeting, Peninsula Fire Department Chief Fred Gilstorff said that a state fire marshall is now involved, and the fire department is working with the school board to get the school up and running as soon as possible.
