At this week’s monthly meeting of the Old Mission Peninsula Historical Society, Rear Admiral Jerry Achenbach will present “The Fifty Year History of the Great Lakes Maritime Academy.”

The meeting will take place on Thursday, Feb. 6, 2020, at Peninsula Community Library. The Historical Society’s business meeting will take place at 6 p.m., with the Maritime presentation beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Old Mission Gazette is Reader Supported.

Achenbach, superintendent of NMC’s Great Lakes Maritime Academy, recently wrote the book “Northwestern Michigan College’s Great Lakes Maritime Academy,” which will be available at the presentation. Historical Society member Ann Swaney contributed to the book, including writing a chapter on the history of female cadets at the Academy.

Donation envelopes will also be available at the presentation, and folks are encouraged to make a contribution towards a scholarship fund for cadets.

Everyone is welcome to attend this free program, and new members to the Historical Society are always welcome. Small donations are encouraged to assist in the group’s ongoing maintenance of historical sites on the Old Mission Peninsula, including the Hessler Log Home, Dougherty House, Mission Church, and Mission Point Lighthouse.
