Today’s Photo of the Day is courtesy of the current situation at Haserot Beach. At the moment, there’s a fair amount of beach there, but who knows how much there will be in a few months. It wasn’t that long ago that the water was lapping up against Don Sargent’s bench there next to the parking lot.

And here’s a pic of the ice-covered rocks where the dock used to be, with Old Mission Point in the background. These were taken a few days ago.

What About the Dock/Boat Launch?

I’ve had a lot of people ask me about the future of the Haserot Beach dock/boat launch, after it washed away so spectacularly in a wild windstorm last year. Here’s what I know…

The current plan from Peninsula Township is to build a new dock/boat launch at nearby Kelley Park (just south of Haserot Beach). There’s been a lot of discussion at Township Board and Parks Committee meetings about the Haserot Beach dock, with a majority feeling that a dock there is too dangerous because of the close proximity to nearby swimmers, kids and other beachgoers.

This discussion has been going on for years, and it appears that Mother Nature helped the issue along by wiping out the Haserot Beach dock altogether.

The plan is to build the Kelley Park boat launch for not only fishing and other boats, but also carry-down water vessels like kayaks and canoes. The township is working with the DNR, which owns Kelley Park, to make this happen in time for the 2020 boating season.

Stay tuned to Old Mission Gazette for more info as it becomes available.

  1. Looks like Don’s bench to me. I drive over there frequently and make sure it is still there. You r right Jane , the water was coming up right next to it, now it is a few more feet out.
    Thanks, Connie Sargent

    • Thanks, Jerry and Connie. I felt good enough for Tim to take me for a drive down there today, and it is indeed Don’s bench. I took it from way back at the boat launch area. You can see the Ostlund bench near the parking lot in the background.

    • Will see what I can find out! We swung by Kelley Park today and there was some sort of area marked off in the water, but it’s not like the swimming area at Haserot. I’m not sure what this is, but will do some digging. There definitely isn’t any sort of boat launch construction happening at Kelley Park yet.
