They’re heeeeerrrreeee… the first batch of strawberries are now available at Between the Bays – Warren Orchards’ farm stands. I secured a couple of quarts last night, and they’re already gone.
That first taste of strawberries every year takes me right back to my mom’s strawberry field down below our barn north of Mapleton. She was in charge of corraling all the neighborhood kids to pick the berries. Then after we helped load them into the back of our VW Bus for distribution around town (some went to Big Boy for their strawberry pies), us kids would head through the orchards to Watson’s Store, where we’d buy candy with our strawberry money, and mom would meet us up there with the bus. Good times.

As for these tasty berries, we ate most of them last night – just plain out of the bowl. The few that remained this morning went into this delicious banana-mango-strawberry smoothie. (It would have benefited greatly from more strawberries, had there been any left.)

The strawberries are available at both of Warren Orchards’ farm stands – 8169 Center Road (across from Peninsula Fire Department’s Station 2) and 2705 Island View Road, up the hill from the library.
As with their asparagus, the strawberries are packaged in quart containers with protective packaging. Owner Wendy Warren just might have some tasty shortcake biscuits available at the stands, too.

Wendy asks that if you need more than five quarts at one time, please order in advance by calling her at (231) 590-2363, emailing [email protected], or using their pre-order form here. I just ordered a flat of strawberries via the form, and it’s super easy.
