Feel free to share this post...

You may have noticed a large vessel in West Bay this week. We did, too, and stopped to snap a photo on our way home from town on Peninsula Drive. That was Wednesday.

It’s the “American Courage,” a Self Discharging Bulk Carrier built in 1979 which took shelter in the bay from the gales of January. I know this because I was able to find it on a very cool website/app called Vessel Finder, where you can plug in the name of a vessel and figure out where it is, where it’s been and where it’s going.

Right now, apparently it’s in Toledo. Read more about the American Courage here.

Tim and I were remarking that you have to be a very special person to be on a vessel on the Great Lakes this time of year. We are definitely not those people!

But we’re glad that our Grand Traverse Bays offer shelter when things get a little wild out there. Here’s another one from six years ago, when the Algomarine sought shelter in West Bay from the winds on the big lake.
