Here are a couple of events coming up on the Old Mission Peninsula…

Open House for Fire Station 3

Back in March, a small ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the new Fire Station 3 on Center Road out towards the Lighthouse. See photos of the event here.

Now that Covid restrictions have loosened up a bit, the Peninsula Township Fire Department is hosting an open house for the new station, and everyone is welcome to attend.

The open house will be held on Sunday, August 15, from 12 noon to 3 p.m. The event will include food, fire trucks, activities for the kids and, of course, the opportunity to view the brand new station.

Fire Station 3 is located at 19270 Center Road, on the east side of the road between Swaney Road and Tompkins Road. The Fire Department is requesting that those who have not been vaccinated, please wear a mask while touring the station.

Farewell Gathering for Methodist Pastor

A farewell gathering will be held for Pastor Zelphia Mobley on August 15, 12 noon to 2 p.m., at Pavilion 1 at Bowers Harbor Park (this is the main pavilion closest to Bowers Harbor Road).

The event, which will include refreshments, is hosted by Old Mission Peninsula United Methodist Church, where Pastor Mobley, known as “Pastor Z”, has served since July 1, 2019. She will be retiring and moving back downstate where her family lives.

Below is a photo of Pastor Z at the recent 2021 Blessing of the Blossoms.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
