Ahh! Winter solstice is upon us – the shortest day of the year. It is a bit of a conundrum that as the days grow lighter and longer, here in the north the winds blow fiercer and the skies are white with snow! Surprisingly, Earth is actually closer to the Sun in December and January than in July and August. It is the changing tilt of the earth in relation to the Sun that causes the seasons.

Old Mission Gazette is Reader Supported.

Author John Steinbeck queried, “What good is the warmth of summer without the cold of winter to give it sweetness?” I love December! The warmth of a cozy fire while curled up with a good book, snow falling softly from the trees during a walk in the woods, a steaming pot of hearty soup on the stovetop … all conjure up images of family, winter holidays and time to quietly gather thoughts.

As we enter a season of holidays, all of us here at Peninsula Community Library wish you the best of the season. You are our family, and we invite you to sit by our hearth and share in goodwill and fellowship!

Please note that we will be closed Dec. 24, 25, 26, 30 and Jan. 1. When TCAPS is closed due to weather, PCL is also closed.

My Christmas Cards by Jack Prelutsky

Oh no one got my Christmas cards,
it’s making me upset,
I sent them off two weeks ago,
but no one got them yet.

I drew a bunch of pictures
and I wrote some poems that rhyme,
I sent them off two weeks ago,
that should be lots of time.

I mailed them to my cousins,
to my uncles and my aunts,
I sent them off TWO WEEKS ago,
I think they’ve had their chance.

But no one got my Christmas cards,
not Mommy and not Gramps,
I sent them off TWO WEEKS ago …
Did I forget the stamps?

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Joyous Kwanzaa!

Hugs,

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
