Today, we celebrate and honor the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the prominent leaders of the Civil Rights Movement. The son of a Baptist minister, King went on to receive a doctorate in theology.

We invite families during regular hours today to make an origami peace dove and receive a National Geographic Kids Biography on King’s life (one per family, please). We are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. as a day of service in honor of Dr. King’s own service to humanity.

The Friends of Peninsula Community Library are looking for a few volunteers with strong arms and backs to occasionally transport boxes of books to the township basement. If you are able to help out, please email me with your contact info. These are the books that are collected for the big summer book sale. The Friends will rotate volunteers so that this is not a big commitment. Be a part of the Book Brigade! Books are accepted for donation on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of the month in the Carriage House from 4 – 6 p.m.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
