Spreading the love of community on this sunny Valentine’s Day!

Busy Week in the Township

The Town Board held their first monthly meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 11. We approved the large event permit for the Bayshore Marathon, which will take place on Saturday, May 24.

We had an action-packed discussion on the procedural steps necessary for the DNR to request changes to the East Bay boat launch at the corner of Center Road and East Shore Road. There was plenty more, so please watch the YouTube video of the meeting (available for 30 days).

The Town Board accepted the Parks Committee recommendation to appoint Christine Murphy to serve as a committee member. For more about Christine, see pages 36-39 in the Jan. 28 meeting packet here. The Town Board also accepted the recommendation for Becky Chown, Township Clerk, to fill the 7th position on the Committee as the voting ex officio member from the Town Board.

The Town Board has requested that the Planning Commission draft language for a Short Term Rental violation fee schedule. This will be presented to the Board for consideration in March.

For our residents who are not sure of the Township Zoning Ordinance, short term rentals of less than 30 days are not allowed in residential dwelling units (Article 6, page 38; revised by Amendment 182). Owner-occupied rentals are only allowed with an approved Bed & Breakfast Special Use Permit (Article 3, page 5; revised by Amendment 136).

Updates from Down the Hall

Mission Point Lighthouse: Nothing to report other than I was able to climb the tower and take pictures of the ice cover off the far north end!!

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
