It was a nose to the grindstone kind of week at the Township Office.
The Agricultural Advisory Committee held their meeting on Tuesday. They are drafting a recommendation for updating the signage language for agricultural producers. They are also starting to look at Amendment 201 and the daily impact it has on our agricultural community. The committee will work towards drafting language for the Planning Commission to review for potential Amendment 201 changes.
The Draft 25/26 Budget is being put together. The Public Hearing on the DRAFT 2025/2026 proposed General Fund and Special Funds will be posted soon.
Our Community Police Officers (CPOs) were in this week to discuss additional road patrols as we gear up for the warmer months. The Township will be submitting a formal request to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Department for additional evening and weekend traffic patrols.
For those in the community that are not aware, there is an alert system for your phone to receive CodeRED notifications. You can register as “guest” vs creating an account. This allows you to choose which alerts you would like to receive — for example, weather alerts and emergencies, evacuation notices, bio-terrorism alerts, boil water notices and missing child reports.
An update on the county-wide Septic Policy was in the Record Eagle yesterday. “The Grand Traverse County Commission voted unanimously to move ahead with a new regulation governing septic system inspections … Next comes a public hearing (or hearings) to gather additional input before the final version of the regulation is formally adopted and approved by the board.” I will keep everyone updated as this progresses.
Updates from Down the Hall
Assessing: The 2025 Notices of Assessment have all been sent out. If you have a question or comment, please reach out to Township Assessor Sally Murray, (231) 223-7313 or [email protected], BEFORE close of business on Thursday February 27, 2025.
Zoning: The draft language for hiring a full time zoning administrator is being finalized. The Township will be posting this job description on the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) site, as well as the Michigan Townships Association. The Township is also finalizing the language to hire an additional Ordinance Enforcement Officer. This will be a part-time local hire. We will make this posting available on the Township website soon and will share via the Old Mission Gazette and other social channels in the Township.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.
Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
