Well, hello sunshine and Michigan spring weather and then a quick good-bye!

The Purchase of Development Rights (PDR) Selection Committee met this week. They are looking to schedule the next round of applications for PDR. Piggybacking on this, the Planning Commission meeting next week — Tuesday, March 4, 7 p.m. at the Township Hall — will be holding a public hearing on amending the Agricultural Preservation Map as part of the PDR ordinance.

The Planning Commission will also be discussing a resolution regarding the Short Term Rentals (STR) policy and violation fine schedule. View the meeting agenda here and the meeting packet here.

We will be welcoming Grand Traverse County Sheriff Mike Shea and Lt. Roy Raska to the Township next week. This is an informal meeting to discuss our overall public safety and the need for additional coverage in the evenings and on weekends.

The Grand Traverse County Road Commission has posted their updated weight restrictions. For more information, click here.

Updates from Down the Hall:

Zoning: The draft language for hiring a full-time Planning and Zoning Administrator is posted on both the Michigan Association of Planning (MAP) and Michigan Townships Association websites, as well as the Peninsula Township website. The Township is also seeking resumes for an additional Ordinance Enforcement Officer. This will be a part-time local hire.

For more about these positions, visit the Peninsula Township website and scroll down to the Employment Opportunity section.

Looking Ahead to Next Week:

I will be attending the Board of Public Works Finance Committee meeting on Wednesday. Let me know if you have any questions, comments or concerns that you would like me to relay — (231) 223-7323, [email protected].

On the Horizon:

I have had a couple of questions regarding the Maner Costerisan report. The Township Board meets on March 11, and although the agenda is not finalized yet, I wanted to let you know that the Board will be reviewing the report in a study session facilitated by Armen Shanafelt (current Planning Commissioner and former Town Board Trustee). (The Maner Costerisan report includes an organizational analysis and recommendations for government structure for Peninsula Township, prepared by Maner Costerisan based in Lansing. -jb)

***Shoreline Regulation Education Session***  This session has been scheduled for April 24, 2025 at St. Joseph Catholic Church at 7 p.m. The Township will host members from the Army Corps of Engineers; Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE); and the Grand Traverse Bay Watershed Center.

As always, check the Peninsula Township website for more details and information.

Have a great weekend, Everyone!

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
