Greetings, Neighbors! I cannot tell a lie — I’m writing this from Treasure Island, Florida. It’s almost like sitting bayside in Peninsula Township … almost.
On to this week’s highlights:
The Planning Commission held their monthly meeting on Tuesday. They invited me to discuss the recommended updating of the ordinance regarding Short Term Rental (STR) violations. I also introduced Capital Improvement Planning (CIP) to the commission and the Budget & Finance ad hoc members, which will be implementing this plan across the Township for all current and future assets.
This led to a short discussion on the Strategic Planning outcome from last week’s Town Board meeting. I reiterated that the top priority is to get the zoning ordinance updated.
Updates from Down the Hall
Clerk’s Office: Our amazing Deputy Clerk, Robin Noval, has been working diligently behind the scenes to make sure the Township is up to speed with the new Earned Sick Time Act (ESTA) as required by law. I would like to give a HUGE shout out to our Clerk, Becky Chown, on the publication of our Winter Newsletter. Hopefully, you received yours and found it as informative and useful as I did. (You can also read it here. -jb)
Planning & Zoning: The Township will be welcoming (back) Elise Loud (fka Elise Crafts) to the Planning Department. Elise was our Zoning Administrator ten years ago, and I had the opportunity to work with her when I was on the Parks Commission. Elise now owns her own community planning company, PlaceCraft, and will be working as a third-party consultant planner. The Township will be advertising for a full-time zoning administrator in the very near future.
Looking Ahead to Next Week
Tuesday, Feb. 11, 7 p.m., Township Hall. Regular Township Board meeting. The Fire Department will be presenting their Annual Awards at the meeting. Our Assessor, Sally Murray, will be presenting a proposal for modifications to Land Division Appeals (LDA).
Thursday, Feb. 13, 3 p.m., Township Hall. Special Parks Committee meeting. The Parks Committee will welcome the new commitee members and discuss their strategic plan.
Have a great Winter Weekend, Everyone! I’ll bring back some sun!

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.
Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
