Here’s a roundup of news and photos around the Old Mission Peninsula…
Saw my first Robin over the weekend. At the Old Mission Post Office (see photo above), which is where I usually see my first Robin each Spring. Also check out the cool Robin that Jack Olson saw a few years back.

Mystery Sign. Township Supervisor Maura Sanders sent me this sign that hangs in her office and wondered about its origin. Anyone know where it came from or who made it? I’m guessing maybe it was located at the little church in the village of Old Mission, which has always been known as “The Old Mission,” but I don’t really know.

Bardon’s is Open! It may be snowing today, but Spring can’t be far off if Bardon’s is open. I took this photo last week before the iconic ice cream shop on the corner of Garfield and East Front Street opened officially. But I came by there yesterday, and it was indeed open. Check out the new colors. They did a poll on Facebook during the winter and asked for feedback on the best colors. The owners listed it for sale last year, but have not found a buyer for it yet.

Books at the Boathouse. The annual fundraiser for Peninsula Community Library was a smashing success, and much fun was had by all who attended. Marc Schollett is always a great MC and kept the crowd laughing. From the library’s Facebook page:
“What a great 19th year for Books at the Boathouse last night! The event raised $21,000 in the evening and another $2100 in related donations for our community library! Thanks to all who bought tickets, bid on auction items, made donations. Hugs to our great auctioneer Marc Schollett of Up North Live and musician John Nedlo. Most of all, thanks to Doug and Erin Kosch and the Boathouse crew! Boathouse Traverse City is the best!”

Random OMP Photos. Here are a few random photos from around the Old Mission Peninsula this past week. Horses, geese, some wild waves at Haserot Beach…
A note about the geese … I took these photos at my family’s farm on the corner of Peninsula Drive and Kroupa Road, a farm we call “The 40.” I had seen some Sandhill Cranes there and went home to get my good camera. Came back and of course, they had vanished. But the geese were still there, so I took some photos of them. Then I wandered around the Peninsula looking for Sandhill Cranes, but still haven’t found any. I know they’re out there. Now I keep the good camera in my car.
