(Editor’s Note: Lindsay and Mark McLaughlin, co-owners of Moondance Flower Farm, introduce us to their “fresh” business here on the Old Mission Peninsula. In 2023, they moved here with their son, Levi, and farm dog, Panda, and bought Bruce and Terry Hooper’s farm at 2399 Kroupa Road. Born and raised Michiganders, they met at Albion College and named the farm after their wedding song – “Moondance” by Van Morrison. Read on for their story. -jb)

If you had told us a couple of years ago that we’d trade in our day jobs and cozy city life for a pair of muddy boots and a sunrise-to-sunset schedule on a flower farm, we probably would’ve laughed and reminded you we could barely keep our succulents alive.

But here we are. Plot twist: We bought a flower farm.

And not just any flower farm, but a little slice of heaven tucked right here on the Old Mission Peninsula – where the sunsets are pure magic and the community has welcomed us with more kindness than we could have ever hoped for.

When we first took the leap, we didn’t have formal training or a background in agriculture (unless you count our houseplants and an overly ambitious vegetable garden). What we did have was a shared dream: to slow down, work with our hands, and build something rooted in beauty, sustainability and joy.

And we also dreamed of working together. As a lawyer (Lindsay) and nurse (Mark), that dream felt far off in our traditional jobs. So we dove headfirst into learning everything we could about growing and designing flowers to bring the dream alive. Now every morning, we wake up surrounded by rows of blooms — and a whole lot of gratitude.

One thing we learned early and are deeply committed to: growing beauty shouldn’t come at the cost of the land we love. That’s why we prioritize sustainable, eco-friendly practices — from the soil up — so our flowers aren’t just good for your home, but good for our community to help keep Old Mission Peninsula blooming for generations to come.

But this isn’t just our story. Our favorite part of this whole adventure has been meeting the people who make Old Mission Peninsula feel like home – fellow farmers, lovely neighbors, and flower lovers of all stripes.

This season, we’re beyond excited to open the farm gates (literally and figuratively!) to our community. Whether you’re after a bundle of fresh-cut blooms for your kitchen table, eager to try your hand at a floral workshop, or just looking for an excuse to wander through rows of ranunculus and dahlias on a sunny afternoon — we hope you’ll come say hi.

And at the heart of it all, we know flowers aren’t just decorations — they’re little daily celebrations. The kind you share with your best friend, your grandma, your neighbor or yourself, just because. They remind us to pause and soak in the small, beautiful details of life. Growing them here for our community is the best part of what we do.

We’re also excited to bring new offerings to our neighbors this season! We’ve launched six-week flower bouquet subscriptions for spring, summer or fall (or go all-in for the full 18 weeks!).

To celebrate, we’re offering a special discount just for our local OMP community. Use the code OMP25 to save $25 on any bouquet subscription — click here to learn more and choose a subscription.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
