Over the past three Thursdays, the Peninsula Township Survey Ad Hoc Committee has met at the Town Hall to formulate a community-wide survey. Continuing weekly through the summer, committee meetings will culminate with delivery of the survey by mail and telephone in September.

After soliciting letters of interest from citizens to participate, the survey committee was created by the Township Board in May to gauge citizens’ opinions on a wide range of township issues, including quality of life, finance, public safety, land use, recreation, commercial activity, and others.

In the six years since the last township wide survey was conducted, demand for township services and resources (i.e. parks, fire protection, etc.) has skyrocketed. Likewise, costs have risen dramatically. Information gleaned from this survey will help structure the Township’s next Master Plan, as well as inform Township officials on how to be most responsive to citizen wants and needs.

Perhaps most important, it will measure citizens’ desire and tolerance for millages and other funding to pay for Township services and resources.

Committee meetings, led by Township Trustee Julie Alexander, along with members Dennis Arouca, Shaina LaFond, David Murphy, Armen Shanafelt and myself, have been attended by a small number of citizens. As we proceed through the summer, we hope that more community members will attend and provide us with guidance on which issues the survey should address.

The meeting schedule is available on the Township’s website here (see all meeting schedules here). Citizens can also provide input by sending an email to Julie Alexander, [email protected].

What do you want us to know? What questions should we be asking our citizens? We hope to hear from you.

SUPPORT YOUR INDEPENDENT LOCAL NEWSPAPER: I started Old Mission Gazette in 2015 because I felt a calling to provide the Old Mission Peninsula community with local news. After decades of writing for newspapers and magazines like the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Family Circle and Ladies' Home Journal, I really just wanted to write about my own community where I grew up on a cherry farm and raised my own family. So I started my own newspaper.

Because Old Mission Gazette is a "Reader Supported Newspaper" -- meaning it exists because of your financial support -- I hope you'll consider tossing a few bucks our way if I mention your event, your business, your organization or your news item, or if you simply love reading about what's happening on the OMP. In a time when local news is becoming a thing of the past, supporting an independent community newspaper is more important now than ever. Thank you so much for your support! -Jane Boursaw, Editor/Publisher, Old Mission Gazette
