Update from Peninsula Township — July 9, 2025
On Monday, July 14, at 11 a.m., there will be a Township Board SPECIAL MEETING regarding the WOMP lawsuit. The only agenda item is the WOMP lawsuit closed session with legal. There will be plenty of time for Public Comment at the beginning of the meeting.
There is a Township Board (Special) meeting tomorrow, July 10, at 5 p.m. This is the same agenda from the cancelled regular Township Board meeting on July 8. This agenda was posted on July 2nd.
Public comment at the beginning of the July 10 meeting is for agenda items only. There is no WOMP lawsuit agenda item for tomorrow. The second public comment for non-agenda items is at the end of the meeting.
We will be running a tight schedule tomorrow, as the Planning Commission has their meeting at 7 p.m. in the Township Hall. If we run out of time during the second public comment, we will post a date specific meeting to continue the meeting/public comment, but we strongly encourage all residents to write letters or attend the Special Meeting on July 14.
If you are unable to attend the July 14 meeting, please send a letter to either myself, [email protected], or Clerk Becky Chown, [email protected] by 9 a.m. on Sunday, July 13. Becky will come in on Sunday to put out a packet addition with received correspondence.
The Township Board will have a statement available at the beginning of the meeting tomorrow, July 10, to provide the most current information we have to help clarify some of the questions we are receiving.
We will have more information to share after the meeting on Monday, July 14.
Sincerely,
Maura Sanders, Supervisor
Peninsula Township

Maura. As things currently stand, is the township responsible for paying WOMP’s attorney fees…for all 11 wineries? I have read through many documents & cannot find. This item is something the residents should have the facts on. Thank you.
This decision will go down in history as one of the worst examples of Michigan Township government leadership. The questions are numerous.
1. How did the final verdict decision differ from that brought forward for consideration at the infamous St. Joseph church meeting in Oct. 2021 by then township lawyer Greg Meihn?
2. Will Peninsula twp file for bankruptcy?
3. Will Peninsula twp board fire the law firm of Fahey Schultz Burzych Rhodes PLC?
4. Will the township settle the lawsuit case against the law firm of Greg Meihn?
5. Will the township settle the lawsuit concerning amendment 201 that has many of the same limitations that the former PTZO section contained that have been judged to be unconstitutional?
6. When did then township supervisor know that we did not have insurance for a $140MM liability?
7. When did then township supervisor communicate that finding to the board and citizens of Peninsula Township?
8. What discussions did the board have concerning liability to the citizens of Peninsula Twp?
9. Will the township board finally be rid of bad advice from the shadow government: Protect the Peninsula?
10. Will leaders responsible for this debacle resign from the board?
Maura, 11am on a Monday does not work for people who are not retired and have full time jobs. This time excludes many people who want to voice their concern outside of an email. Please consider rescheduling this!
Mark makes a helpful point. The meeting should be as inclusive and respectful, as possible. I support his decision to reconsider a time when people who work during the day can attend.
Maura
What are you afraid of, many of us were prepared to speak at the beginning of the meeting this week.
Curt is right this is bad government.
For someone who promised good government this belies that promise.
Already people are expressing their unhappiness. See the sign across from the township office.
