A couple of news items from Peninsula Community Library are below. By the way, have you checked out their new website? It looks amazing!

Job Opening at the Library

Job opportunities with the library don’t come along very often, so if this is something you might be interested in, email Library Director Vicki Shurly, [email protected]. If I didn’t have a newspaper to run, I’d be all over this. Here’s the scoop from Vicki…

A very rare opportunity is available here at Peninsula Community Library to join, beginning in mid-September, the special family that is my staff. The schedule being offered is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Saturdays from 10-2 and, when they occur, any 5th Saturdays of the month.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable with computers and everyday technology, organized, patient, able to think creatively, a team player, and most importantly here at PCL, good with people of all ages. They need not have library experience, as we will offer staff training.

I am especially interested in someone who is available to pick up hours as needed during the week when other staff members want time away. The hourly wage is $22/hour, and the staff freely trades hours as needed for time off. Note that the position does require occasionally lifting book boxes, setting up tables and chairs for programming, etc.

The benefits? Working in a great environment where your community loves you! I will not be accepting inquiries by phone or in person. Please send me via email, [email protected], a resume with a cover letter. PCL is a great place to work! I must receive the resume and letter by 5 p.m. Thursday, August 28.

A Note About Library Funds & Accounts

You may have heard that the Library Board voted to move some funds from their account with Peninsula Township to a different account that the library already maintains outside of the Township fund. Again, here’s the scoop straight from Vicki:

We were established under Michigan Public Act 164 of 1877 which gives the elected library board members autonomy over library expenditures and operations. The statute requires income for the library to be deposited into a restricted trust and agency account, but the funds may only be directed for use by the elected library board for library expenses. There is no restriction on the amount of money that can be withdrawn.

In consultation with the attorney at the Library of Michigan, Peninsula Community Library’s Board of Trustees decided to withdraw a majority of funds from the Trust and Agency Fund at the Township and deposit them in accounts that the library already maintains outside of the township fund.

The concern is not mismanagement of funds — we have a great relationship with the township, and they are very supportive of the library. The concern is access to the funds with whatever steps the township takes going forward in the ongoing issues. The library’s operations are outside of the township’s legal authority. This simply assures that while things are sorted out, the library will continue operations as normal.

The library is not a part of nor has a position on the township/winery issues, as we are a nonpartisan entity and serve all in the community who walk through our doors.
