After nearly three years of serving the Old Mission Peninsula from its home at Seven Hills, Mission Proper will conclude cafe operations at the end of October 2025.

Conceptualized in 2022 and opened in June 2023, the community coffee shop quickly became a creative gathering place for meetings, conversations with friends, and remote work with a laptop — all with great food, delicious coffee and warm hospitality.

Founder Jennifer Kuhar reflects on the community impact the coffee shop has had on the Old Mission Peninsula.

“It’s been an honor to bring something new and meaningful to this community — something that felt personal, intentional, and deeply rooted in care,” she says. “The support we’ve received has been nothing short of incredible, and I’ll carry that with me forever.”

With the lease at Seven Hills concluding this fall, Mission Proper will spend the remaining season celebrating its time in the space — and looking ahead to what might come next. While this chapter is closing, the opportunity for a future coffee offering or continuation of the Mission Proper experience remains on the table, she says. She invites any and all interest in future stewardship.

“We’re open to conversations with individuals or groups who feel inspired to carry this forward, whether through a turnkey opportunity, select assets, or a fresh take on the concept,” notes Jennifer. “We truly believe a coffee shop belongs here, and we’re hopeful the next steward will feel the same.”

As the Mission Proper lease comes to a close, she says she’s made the thoughtful decision not to renew and instead create space for new opportunities. “We wish Seven Hills continued success as they chart their next chapter.”

Mission Proper will continue to operate through late October, with farewell dates and celebratory events to be announced. Interested parties may inquire directly about the business model, asset availability, or transition possibilities.

A Note from Jay Milliken, co-owner of Seven Hills:

“We will be missing our friends at Mission Proper come November, but please rest assured we will be continuing with a coffee shop and food service at Seven Hills!! In addition to Mission Proper operating seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., we also have Heron Creek operating seven NIGHTS a week from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. serving delicious tacos, salads and snacks!!”

Jay notes that beginning in November, they will continue to offer coffee and food service in the space currently occupied by Mission Proper.

  4. I will miss my daily brownies or cookies.
It has always been a comfortable retreat.
Hopefully someone will step in and keep up the vibe.

  5. As a concerned Peninsula Township resident, I can only pray that the Ordinance Enforcement Officer will be on site during Mission Proper’s shutdown. We need to make sure they are putting the correct number of croissants into each box – as per code, as they pack up their leftover perishables.

  6. will miss you, Mission Proper! You created so many wonderful memories for your residents. Your attention to beauty and detail will always be remembered and cherished! I can’t wait to see what you will create next!
