Hard to believe that Labor Day is approaching, along with the mental mindset that summer is coming to a close. Labor Day was born in the late 19th century as a way to draw attention to fairer wages, safer working conditions, reasonable working hours, and the contributions of laborers to the prosperity of the nation.
Now a federal holiday, most people celebrate with picnics, barbecues and parades. Many of us remember the “no white” after Labor Day rule our parents and grandparents adhered to. While outdated today, it reflects a time when wealthy people wore white clothing as vacation wear and then packed it away once they returned to cooler weather lives in the city. Thank goodness, it is an irrelevant tradition today.

Speaking of Labor Day, PCL is closed Saturday, August 30 through Monday, September 1. We will keep your holds for a few extra days next week, so no worries there!
For those of you who will be cleaning out gardens this weekend and in the next few weeks, please remember to save seeds and bring them in for our Seed Library in the old card catalog in the foyer! Seeds are available in the spring to share with our patrons. Our success depends on your donations. Help by gathering them from your garden and bringing them to the library in marked and dated paper envelopes. We will store them safely over the winter months!

As Monday is Labor Day, Fox’s Fiesta, a movement class for little patrons, has been rescheduled for Monday, 9/8 at 10:30 a.m.
Also 9/8 at 6:30 p.m., we welcome back Gary and Jackie: Singing the Good Old Songs Again. If the weather is nice, we will be outside and you may bring a picnic. This will be the last outdoor concert of the season!
We wish you all a happy and safe holiday weekend! Don’t forget that summer really doesn’t end until September 22, unless you are going by the meteorological end, which has each season broken down to almost equal segments with summer ending on August 31. The latter is used mostly by researchers and scientists. I think I will stick to the equinox and enjoy just a little more summer!
