Edgar Allen Poe was only 40 years old when he died 176 years ago this week, but he left behind a legacy of mystery, both in his work and his personal life.

Considered the father of detective fiction, his poems and stories often involved the macabre. He was the first American author to make a living primarily through writing, which made for a difficult life. Most people today don’t realize that during his short lifetime, he was known more for nonfiction essays and reviews that he wrote as the editor of a number of magazines than the famous gothic horror we associate him with today.
Rivals found him a severe, but respected critic, and he often battled back and forth with other writers of the era. It was an image that followed him to his grave after his mysterious death, the cause and circumstances leading to it unknown. How interesting that in this month of goblins, witches, ghosts and darkening days, we return almost fondly to his stories that chill us with the unknown!
What we DO know here at Peninsula Community Library is that October is a month of fun for all!

I leave you with a bit of humor from a man who often wrote darkly, but actually loved satire, puns, hoaxes and silly names. I can certainly relate to this one!
“If you wish to forget anything on the spot, make a note that this thing is to be remembered!” – Edgar Allen Poe
And I cannot not share this from Lucy Maud Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables:
“I am so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers!”
Happy Autumn!
