It’s been kind of a goat year here on the Old Mission Peninsula, so why not end the year with some special holiday cheer for the goats!

The Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy just sent out a note that you can recycle your Christmas tree by feeding it to their hard-working goats. We have a soft spot for goats here on the OMP, since our Peninsula Township Parks Committee hired some goats to eat invasive plants at the new Bowers Harbor Natural Area this summer. Read Paula’s great story about that here.

As it turns out, goats love Christmas trees, which are not only a tasty treat, but also packed with nutrients to keep our four-legged friends in great shape.

From the Conservancy…

Before you set your Christmas tree to the curb, consider donating it to our invasive-species-fighting goats. Conifer trees (free of decorations, tinsel, paint or other chemicals) are packed with vitamin C and other essential nutrients, making them a welcome winter treat for our goats. In addition to giving your tree a second life, you can provide our goats the nourishment they need to do what they do best — helping restore and steward our protected lands.

With your help, we hope to collect enough trees to keep them happily snacking throughout the season!

Here’s how it works:

1) Sign up using the links below (registration is appreciated but not required).
2) Bring your tree to one of our designated drop-off locations during the specified times.
3) Follow the signage to the drop-off site.
4) Feel great knowing you have supported habitat restoration and responsibly recycled your tree!
5) Optional: Snap a selfie with the goats!

Christmas Tree Donation Drop-off Times and Locations:

Important Reminder: Please only drop your tree off during the specified hours – do not leave trees at the gate or trailhead.

As always, thank you for your support. From all of us at the Conservancy (including the goats) – we wish you a joyful and hopeful start to the New Year!
